There was a time when I’d depend upon the navigation skills of a friend for an exploration trip. And she almost always ended the picnic with the line ‘I think I had the map upside down’ – the rest of the time was normally spent trying to find our way back home.

Navigation MobileSo when Nokia announced the free-for-download Maps 2.0 application, I let out a silent whoop of joy. After all, the popularity of mobile phones does make them ideal for navigation & route-planning. Most of Nokia’s latest mobiles like the: N95, N78 & N82 come with inbuilt compasses & GPS capabilities. Nokia Maps enhances these devices with accurate directions using GPS. Also, there’s no worry if your device doesn’t have inbuilt GPS - you can simply use an external GPS module.

You can use Nokia Maps to find locations within a city; plan your route; or as a navigation system while driving. The Walk component provides pedestrians with details of surrounding streets, malls, attractions and even pathways through parks.

Navigation MobileThe coolest feature however, is voice navigation – a blessing for those driving alone. It provides a driver with accurate navigation directions so you don’t have to worry about taking the wrong turn. Oh one more thing, this system not only alerts me about incoming calls, but is also smart enough to halt the navigation system (or stop talking) if I choose to answer it.
